No Child Should Sleep on the Floor: Tackling Bed Poverty in North Staffordshire

No Child Should Sleep on the Floor

How a local charity is changing lives across North Staffordshire

It’s easy to take a warm bed for granted.

For many families across North Staffordshire, it’s not a guarantee. It’s a luxury.

Thousands of children are growing up in homes without basic essentials — no mattress, no flooring, sometimes not even a way to cook a hot meal. Instead of climbing into bed at night, some children are sleeping on sofas, sharing floors, or making do with whatever is available.

That’s the reality facing too many families in our local communities.

And it’s exactly why the work of Emmaus North Staffs matters now more than ever.

A Growing Crisis Hidden in Plain Sight

In a recent interview, John Webb spoke openly about the scale of the issue facing families across North Staffordshire.

Many homes are not just struggling — they’re empty.

Not empty of people.
Empty of essentials.

Families moving into housing often do so with nothing. No beds. No flooring. No kitchen appliances. No furniture. Just bare rooms and the pressure of trying to build a life from nothing.

For children, that reality can be particularly harsh.

Sleeping on the floor night after night affects more than comfort. It affects sleep, health, school performance, and confidence. Something as simple as a bed becomes the foundation for stability.

The Bed Bundle That Changes Everything

To tackle this crisis, Emmaus North Staffs has created a practical, life-changing solution: bed bundles.

Each bundle includes:

  • A brand-new bed
  • A mattress
  • Bedding and essentials

Everything a child needs to sleep safely and comfortably.

It sounds simple. But for the families receiving them, it’s transformational.

So far, this initiative has helped more than a thousand families across the region.

That means over a thousand homes where children now have somewhere safe to sleep.

Over a thousand moments of relief for parents who no longer have to watch their children sleep on the floor.

Furniture Poverty Is About More Than Furniture

Bed poverty is just one part of a wider issue: furniture poverty.

Many families face the challenge of setting up a home without access to basic household items — tables, chairs, appliances, or storage. Without these essentials, everyday life becomes harder, more stressful, and more uncertain.

Emmaus North Staffs works at the heart of this challenge.

By providing furniture, support, and practical help, they don’t just fill rooms — they help rebuild dignity, stability, and independence.

A Project at Risk — Just When It’s Needed Most

Despite its success, this vital work now faces a serious challenge.

Funding is falling.

Government grants and international funding streams that once supported the project have reduced significantly. At the same time, demand is rising — more families, more referrals, more urgent need.

It’s a difficult combination:

Less funding. More families in crisis.

Without support from the community, projects like the bed bundle initiative risk slowing down — or stopping altogether.

And that would mean more children sleeping on floors.

A New Partnership to Raise Awareness

To help tackle this challenge and reach more people, Emmaus North Staffs has taken an important step.

They have been named the official charity partner of the Cris Cohen's H I D D E N event at the Stone Food & Drink Festival taking place between 8th - 10th May.

This partnership creates an opportunity to shine a light on bed poverty — a hidden issue that many people don’t realise exists in their own community.

Festivals bring people together. Food connects communities. And this partnership ensures that alongside celebration, there is also awareness, compassion, and action.
